FAQ

Application and Submission

Where can I find the Submission Guidelines of the first Open Call?

You will find the Submission Guidelines here

Where can I describe the work I am submitting?

–> Explain your work briefly in the ‘Artist Statement’ section. UnderBio you can describe your art practice: a brief personal bio and artists’ statement.

I am a video artist, how many videos can I send you and can they be projected in the exhibition?

–> Please submit up to 3 most relevant videos. Unless there is a specific reason for entering more videos, please clarify why you like to submit more video work. Please indicate relevant and necessary technical details about the ideal conditions of presentation/exhibition (single or multichannel, cinema set-up, projection, LCD screen, size, etc).

Why do you need artist statement, portfolio or CV?

–> In case your work has been selected, we will use this information to communicate about you or your work. Please send us a brief and clear version.

Do the submissions need to be topic specific? Is there a specific theme or topic that you consider particularly relevant for this edition of Privacytopia, or are you open to a wide range of interpretations within the realm of art and privacy?

–> The general theme of Privacytopia is broad: datafication. It relates to topics as privacy, surveillance and data usage. But also AI, machine learning, IoT, robotics, cyborgs, border control, e-waste, ecology, etc. We are open to a wide range of interpretations within the realm of art and datafication, privacy, etc. If you feel your work relates to datafication, don’t hesitate to apply. Please indicate in the ‘Artist Statement’ how your work relates to datafication.

Can I submit a performance or a work in progress?

–> Yes.

Can I submit a work that I intend to further adapt (like a performance or a work in progress)?

–> Yes, please explain how these changes would be implemented.

Can we apply as a group? Do you accept artwork realised by a duo or collective? Could you please provide more information about the submission process? Do you prefer one for each of us or one for our collective?

–> Yes, we accept work from individual artists as well as duo or collective proposals. As a duo or collective, you only submit once for the group. If you submit as a collective or duo, and you want to submit an extra work as an individual artist, please do so separately.

When will we hear back from the selection committee?

–> To get our updates, visit our News section and/or sign up to our monthly newsletter.

Where do I submit my application?

–> Please, send your submission to info@privacytopia.org

Can you please advise what is the word count for the idea proposal?

–> Artist Statement: max. 250 words, Bio & CV: max. 500 words

What is the submission format?

–> Artist Statement, bio and CV are text-based. The portfolio can be a pdf (for a specific work) and/or a link to a website (for a general overview of your practice).

My work is not finished. Do you accept samples of my previous works? Does the work need to be finished by the time of the submission deadline? Or can it be developed until a few months before the Festival?

–> The work does not need to be ready for the application deadline. A concept idea can be enough, but please make sure that it’s understandable for the jury. If selected, we obviously expect the work to be finished for the festival exhibition.

When will I be notified about my submission? Did my documents go through?

–> There are large numbers of submissions, if you haven’t been answered, please be patient, we’ll answer you as soon as possible.

I forgot to attach an important part to my submission, can I send an additional email with another attachement even though it is now past the deadline?

–> If you have additional information or changes, please end them to us, referring to your original submission. We will do our best to addapt. If this is not possible, we will let you know and explain the issue.

Will there be a second round for applications?

–> YES

Costs and fees

In Costs and Fees section you mentioned "case-by-case proposal for the selected artist", can you explain it more what you mean?

–> We will communicate about the budget after the pre-selection has been made. There is a genral budget for the open call, that will be divided among all selected projects.

Is there any prize for selected artists or not.

–> We rather don’t put artist in competition with each other. No, there is no ‘best of the best’ selection.

Exhibition and Curation

I want to know how this exhibition works, if selected works will be for sale or they will be only exhibited? I would like to inquire whether the selected artworks will be considered for sale.

–> The festival does not engage in commercial activities. The festival does not offer artworks for sale and will not charge a commission if the exhibition is the reason for a sale (although a small donation to the organization would certainly be appreciated).

Is it possible to submit a workshop? I have a workshop ready and would like to have people participate in it during the exhibition.

–> We are open to (and even encourage) all kinds of media, actions, engagements. From video to painting, from music score to text based work, from performance to action, from workshop to community engagement.

It is a group exhibition?

If necessary works will be presented in an alterantive way (for example: performances, workshops, filmprogram, solo presentations).
